Accurate methane emissions measurement is critical to driving real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Diversified, with Montrose’s guidance, has demonstrated industry leadership by shifting from estimation to direct measurement—achieving a remarkable increase in measurement-based emissions reporting from 29% to 92%. This sets a new benchmark for the oil and gas industry, proving that what gets measured can truly be managed and reduced.”

The Global Methane Pledge (GMP) was launched at COP26 in 2021, aiming for participants to cut global methane emissions by at least 30% from 2020 levels by 2030. COP28 in 2023 built on this momentum by prioritizing methane. The Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0 is the leading comprehensive framework for measurement-based reporting in the oil and gas sector, enhancing the accuracy and transparency of methane emissions reporting, which is crucial for effective mitigation strategies.

Montrose Environmental Solutions, Inc. (Montrose) supported our Confidential Client on its journey to net zero, including its involvement in OGMP 2.0 with two main tasks in 2024:

  1. OGMP 2.0 advisory support, and
  2. Net zero/greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction advisory support.

In May 2024, with Montrose’s support, the Confidential Client submitted its Year 2 Annual Report to OGMP, along with an updated Implementation Plan. This milestone demonstrates our Confidential Client’s commitment to achieving Gold Standard Reporting for accurate and transparent methane reporting (see Gold Standard Figure 1)

Objectives

Research has found that emissions estimates from the oil and gas industry were significantly inaccurate, prompting efforts to improve methane emissions estimates. OGMP 2.0’s focus on measurement to drive accurate emissions inventory reporting, which will, in turn focus emissions reduction efforts.

The study,

The Confidential Client’s 2024 OGMP 2.0 program objectives were:

  • Implementation plan revisions and execution
  • Level 4 source-level emissions reporting

Montrose guided the Confidential Client to achieve program objectives.

  • Sampling plan development and execution - Evaluated Confidential Client emissions and equipment inventory to develop representative sample populations for direct emissions measurement.
  • Source measurement technology evaluation - As technology-agnostic partners Montrose provided objective support to identify the right tool for each type of emissions source.
  • Measurement campaign deployment - Montrose challenged our Confidential Client to meet ambitious goals for measurement. Over the past two years, our Confidential Client increased its measurement coverage from 29% to 92% of its emissions.
  • Measurement-based emission factor development - Montrose analyzed our Confidential Client’s data to determine transparent and accurate statistics for emission factors for use throughout their assets.

These objectives led to the Confidential Client achieving the OGMP 2.0 Gold Standard Pathway for emissions measurement and reporting for 2024

Innovation

Montrose helps our Confidential Client achieve their methane emissions measurement both by using cutting-edge technology to measure emissions to recommend technologies that the Confidential Client uses internally. Developing emissions inventories from real measurements is an innovative strategy in the industry. Montrose has helped position our Confidential Client as leaders in methane measurement, reporting, and reduction.

Impact

Montrose’s strategic support of our Confidential Client’s OGMP journey has enabled the Confidential Client to account for its methane emissions more accurately. Measurement data is ultimately used to inform emissions reduction strategies. Through its OGMP commitment, the Confidential Client upholds a higher standard of methane management by effectively measuring, reporting, and reducing emissions.

Before OGMP 2.0 and engaging Montrose, our Confidential Client measured only about 29% of its methane emissions; the rest of the inventory was estimated using generic data.

By the end of 2024, with Montrose’s help implementing OGMP 2.0 direct measurement data, the Confidential Client reported 92% of its methane emissions through direct measurement methods. This accomplishment enabled the Confidential Client achieving OGMP 2.0 Gold Standard Pathway for emissions measurement and reporting for 2024, positioning the company to achieve its goals:

  1. Reach Methane Intensity Reduction Targets

Reduce Scope 1 methane intensity by 30% by 2026 and 50% by 2030 (2020 baseline)

  1. Achieve Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 GHG Emissions

Reach net zero Scope 1 and 2 absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 (2020 baseline)

The Confidential Client has reduced emissions and met its first goal early in 2023, achieving a 50% reduction in Methane Intensity from 2020 emissions.

Sustainable Practices

Montrose collaborates with our Confidential Client to establish long-lasting quantification programs. As the Confidential Client enhances its understanding of major emissions sources, it takes steps to reduce emissions effectively. Previous reliance on industry estimates, which was the norm, may have missed critical emissions reduction opportunities. With the ability to target specific sources, the Confidential Client’s efforts now have a more significant long-term impact, aiding the achievement of their 2040 net zero goal.
